Bhajan- Devotional Songs

The musical elements of 'chanting' of the 'Sama-mantras' of the vedic era derived its inspiration from natural sounds. Thus chanting is the earliest form of vocal music meant in praise of several deities. Beyond prayers, the musical appeal was to transcend one's own natural limitations and thus elements of spirituality could be found at every root of Indian music. This tradition is still continuing .

Spiritual attainment through total surrender and devotion towards 'God' was the key philosophy of 'Bhakti' in India. Bhajan or devotional songs, an integral part of 'Bhakti', inspired great poets, composers and devotees like Meerabai, Surdas, Kabirdas, Tulsidas, Guru Nanak, Bhramhanand, Narsi Mehta and many others for the last several centuries. Bhajans are usually based on pure ragas or as light classical compositions and folk tunes. The lyrics are very important as it reflects 'Bhakti' or devotion which equates to prayer. Bhajans are immensely popular among wide audience and it has been composed and rendered by top vocalists.
